Garment Production Line Worker
1. What are the tasks and responsibilities of the career?
2. What is the work environment like?
- An assembly line of workers each specialize in a certain task in creating the product. Such as stitching on a sleeve, attaching a collar, sewing button holes, and attaching appliques.
- Most every day of work is the same, a worker will use they're skill to assemble many garments a day.
- Workers must move quickly to produce as many products a day as possible.
2. What is the work environment like?
- Most line workers are from countries outside of the United States, they're environment is cramped and they're employers strict.
- Many people work in this position it is a team effort.
- Hours are long and irregular, production depends on consumer demand. During peak season workers could be putting in 10-20 hour days.
- Each line worker is required different experience for they're position.
- They must know how to use the equipment needed to do they're portion of the job.
- No education is specifically required for this line of work, but workers must be skilled in they're section of the assembly line.
- Most employees in this position around the world are hugely underpaid, some only making as little as 2-5% of the garment's selling price.
- Most people who have this job have it because they need it. More workers are need for this position everyday, but less and less people will be willing to be worked so hard and paid so little to do this job.
